Folklore is an important component of belly dance. Very often you may encounter a folkloric section in a mejance or other oriental songs. Also, many belly dance movements are rooted in traditional folklore dances.

Let's work on our dance technique, including shimmies and proper posture, through a series of folklore drills. This intensive will cover the basics of such folk styles as Saidi, Kawleeya, Khaliji, and Muwashahat. Each dance tutorial will have a short combo.

Difficulty: All levels

Workload: Light

Suggested duration: 1 week

If you follow our suggested duration of one week, get ready to invest 1,5 hour per week in your training. But remember, you can always go through this intensive at your own pace. One week is just a suggested structure.

This intensive consists of four dance tutorials, each 20-mins long:

  1. Saidi Edition: Layered Shimmy. Are you ready to work on some folk steps that you can use in belly dance? Let's learn a Saidi combo while improving our posture and layered shimmy skills!

  2. Iraqi Edition: Neck Stretch & Hair Flip. I know that many of you get nervous thinking about all those crazy hair flips, but let's take it easy. In this drill we'll break down a basic Iraqi hair flip, as well as work on typical Iraqi dance steps that you can include in your belly dance shows.

  3. Muwashahat Edition: Arabesque. Arabesque is one of the most challenging movements in belly dance. It has a lot of nuances and requires a strong core, and good sense of balance. Let's work on it via a combo in Muwashahat style.

  4. Khaliji Edition: Softness in Your Movements. Let's just have fun! Relax and feel the groove. Very soft movements and a Khaliji combo are waiting for us!
